Oppam & Oozham -Terrific opening

Which genre movie is most acceptable in a festival season? A million dollar question repeatedly discussed among the film makers. In an healthy and competitive industrial environment coupled with rapidly changing tastes of the common audience, the answer is Himalayan task to arrive at. Comedy genre is the majority answer but the Vishu proved otherwise with the success of Jacobinte swargarajyam which is basically a family drama. So it may be family or comedy ? We may have an concrete answer for this question and it can be text book for the makers for thorough referring in coming season.

The start of the Onam is fortunately on a good note for the Mollywood all the three films released so far have good WOM at the box office. Super Star Mohanlal- Priyadarshan combo Oppam , Supreme Star Prithviraj – Jeethu Joseph Oozham and today’s release Kunchako Boban- Sidharth Siva  Kochavva Paulo Ayyappa Coelho (KPAC ). While Oppam & Oozham belongs to same genre, thriller. The KPAC has been termed feel good entertainer basically targeting kids.

It is glad to see Mohanlal- Priyan combo strikes at box office with good reviews and good WOM. A hit that too convincing one was a much needed milestone for both Mohanlal and Priyan. Third film in a span of a month for Mohanlal and the dubbed version telugu film Janatha Garage still in some of the centers. But a missing push at box office was in demand for the Super Star. Even the morning shows of Oppam had relatively average start but the WOM made a big difference towards end of the day. The calculated and clever releasing pattern of securing big screens across major centers has come in handy considering four other competitors. The film has got an impressive opening with a 1.55 Cr gross and may cross 4 Cr by the weekend if the trend it has set by the evening shows on first day continues in major centers. Mohanlal’s performance is being treated as top notch and Priyan’s direction also properly praised. Normally these two factors should ignite the box office. But still it is too early to predict the box office fate of this movie due to the good WOM other films also has. Anyway good start at the box office for sure.

Jeethu Jospeh is blessed and targeted with his past movies. His movies are compared with either Drishyam or Memories .So the director cautioned his fans about his new venture Oozham declaring it just as thriller and don’t expect for twist and turns. Oozham impresses on the first day. The script and direction of Jeethu has been received well. Prithvi performance also applauded well. But the film occupancies in certain areas were on grey side while on other side brighter. This disparity likely to overcome in coming days. But has tremendous first day with 1.23 Cr gross. The tough competition is biggest hurdle it has to face.

So the first day figures show both of the thrillers shines at box office. New releases tend to decrease the show count in order to accommodate their shows. Even then both films will have wide range of screens to their credit. Whether it can sustain the momentum ? the fate will be decided by the Onam
