We summarize a fabulous year for Mollywood Boxoffice, here at Boxoffice Verdicts. Here is the much awaited annual report card :-
2012 shall be regarded as one of the more successful years in recent Mollywood history, and definitely the year with the highest hit-rate since the advent of the millennium. The year saw 127 malayalam films released (other than dubbed versions), out of which the trade declared 15 films as profitable, and another 3 ventures as break even. BOV here presents the 2012 Mollywood Annual Report Card :-
THE RANKINGS ARE BASED ON
- BOXOFFICE STATUS
- GROSS COLLECTIONS
Rank 01
Mayamohini
Gross : 19.63 Crores
BO Verdict : Blockbuster
No prizes for guessing the Numero Uno this year, and it is Dileep's Mohini avatar, which created a sort of frenzy which perhaps no other solo-lead film has managed to do since Rajamanikyam.
Rank 02
Ordinary
Gross : 15.11 Crores
BO Verdict : Blockbuster
Ordinary was the first film in 2012 to make it big at the collection counters, and perhaps the film which set the tone for the golden couple of months during Apr - May 2012, which saw almost 6 big releases reaching the HIT status.
Rank 03
Run Babby Run
Gross : 14.36 Crores
BO Verdict : Blockbuster
Run Babby Run holds the record for highest average collection per show in 2012. Though the film ran for much lesser days than the other blockbusters of the year, RBR emerged the Opening King of the year ( behind the catastrophical Casanovva )
Rank 04
Thattathin Marayathu
Gross : 12.39 Crores
BO Verdict : Blockbuster
The Dark Horse for the year 2012. The film was perhaps never expected to reach these heights, even by its makers. Thattathin Marayathu is that small film which made it huge at the BO in 2012
Rank 05
My Boss
Gross 11.95 Crores (till 06 Jan 2013)
BO Verdict : Super Hit
The film which made 2012 Dileep's own in every sense. The clean entertainer gushed up the relatively quiet 4th quarter of 2012, and is still strong in 15+ centers.
Rank 06
Ustad Hotel
Gross : 9.12 Crores
BO Verdict : Super Hit
The most talked about and the longest running movie of the year. Dulquar Salman rised to the hyped stardom with this movie, and Anwar Rasheed showed why he is the best we have. Thilakan.. almost became a boxoffice draw by himself...!
Rank 07
Spirit
Gross : 8.12 Crores
BO Verdict : Super Hit
Ranjith brand ruled the roost, with a content-appreciative-subsidy on Entertainment Tax from the Govt, saw Spirit earn a fabulous share for the distributors from the theatres. Hence a Super Hit.
Rank 08
Mallu Singh
Gross : 8.50 Crores
BO Verdict : Hit
Multiple Stars + Big Release + Commercial Elements + Festive Mood = Big Opening + BO Success. Eg : Mallu Singh.
Rank 09
Grand Master
Gross : 7.00 Crores
BO Verdict : Hit
Grandmaster is the film which benefitted the most from Satellight rights, among the successful films in 2012. The film had a remarkable second week, which propelled it to success.
Rank 10
Ayalum Njanum Thammil
Gross : 6.28 Crores
BO Verdict : Hit
Quite a breather for Prithviraj, in an otherwise disastrous 2012. Thanks to lal Jose, who came back strong with two back to back hits after the failure of Spanish Masala. Could have hit the 8 Crore mark easily, but for the theatre strike.
Rank 11
Diamond Necklace
Gross : 5.29 Crores
BO Verdict : Hit
Another gem from Lal Jose propelling Fahad Fazil to stardom. This movie clearly outran its competitors in the long run, and the extra mileage from Joy Alukkas helped improve its profitability.
Rank 12
Bavuttiyude Namathil
Gross : 5.05 Crores (upto 06 Jan 2013)
BO Verdict : Hit
The Megastar finally managed to finish the year with a bang, and finally a clean hit to his name. Still strong in 60+ centers, and definitely shall climb up the ladder once its run gets terminated.
Rank 13
22 Female Kottayam
Gross : 4.52 Crores
BO Verdict : Hit
The Brand 'Ashiq Abu" got established, and with a shocker of a movie, to follow up the light hearted Salt N Pepper. Mission "Break Through" achieved for Fahad.
Rank 14
Da Thadiya
Gross : 4.24 Crores (upto 06 Jan 2013)
BO Verdict : Hit
A film which marched to success predominantly on the shoulders of the Director's brand. Da Thadiya still continues strong in 55+ theaters.
Rank 15
Second Show
Gross : 3.43 Crores
BO Verdict : Hit
Second Show was the first movie to set the Mollywood Boxoffice on Fire in 2012, and the presented Dulquar Salman a memorable debut success.
Rank 16
Mr Marumakan
Gross : 7.63 Crores
BO Verdict : Above Average
Mr Marumakan, despite not being a clean hit, did attract footfalls to the cinema halls, and grossed well above a majority of the hits in 2012. The high cost of production prevented the movie from earning industry average profits, though, the venture did break even.
Rank 17
Thappana
Gross : 6.26 Crores
BO Verdict : Above Average
Thappana had a meagre opening, but clinged on to the screens due to the relatively better word of mouth than its competitor. Definitely a profitable venture.
Rank 18
Trivandrum Lodge
Gross : 4.49 Cross
BO Verdict : Above Average
The film proved that tiltillation does work once in a while in Mollywood boxoffice, just like Rathinirvedam did last year. Though the over the top presentation prevented family from going anywhere near the cinema halls, Trivandrum Lodge did enough and more to earn profits
Rank 19
Cobra
Gross : 6.05 Crores
BO Verdict : Average
Cobra secured a thunderous opening, despite being sandwiched between big releases, but lost the steam from the second week onwards. The rights amount guided the venture to financial safety.
Rank 20
Husbands in Goa
Gross : 4.70 Crores
BO Verdict : Average
Another film which proved that half decent multi starrers still have acceptance in Mollywood. HIG is a no profit no loss venture.
