Friday Matinee- A week that created records
A week that will be treated as a golden page in the book of Kerala Box office due to unprecedented flow of crowd to a watch a move…. Pulimurugan.. The story does not end there and Thoppil Joppan also joined the party. Vyshak and Johny Antony , the directors of the both films can be proud of their respective films outstanding success. The social networks were conquered by Malayalam cinema even in trending and several notable other language film critics for the first time time went on to write reviews of Malayalam cinema.
Top 5 movies as on 14/10/2016
1 Pulimurugan
The record Murugan is breaking all the existing records after records. The unimaginable collection it has brought and is bringing not treated as surprise but infused positivity and bright hope for the Mollywood’s far reaching area of box office. Malayalam film has proven for the first time it can reach 5 Cr in a single day and 25 Cr in a week. The Mohanlal mass has reached to Mumbai to Bhilai and Bangalore to Jaipur. Screens have steadily maintained till this Sunday in Kerala and many cities have three to five and even seven screens to credit. The exhibitors are thoroughly happy and this extra ordinary success may boost courage to open more screens in more area of Kerala. The film has collected a record breaking 25.46 Cr in the first week as per early estimates from around 5,000 shows in Kerala alone. It has around 200 screens in its credit in Kerala and 120 plus screens in Rest of India. Due to the Hartal on Thursday the film estimated a loss of nearly 1.50 Cr. For the weekend bash more screens were added in Kerala and some of metros in India like Mumbai and Bangalore. One more big news cropped in is that the movie has garnered a staggering 15 Cr through satellite and international rights which also one more feather in the cap of Murugan. The happy days for Super Star Mohanlal continues.
2. Thoppil Joppan
One more hit to Mega star Mammootty. The producers has confidently declared that the film has entered in to profit zone . It has been a striking feature of big ‘M’ films that it is assuring big chunk of revenue before the release itself through rights. With a single week perfect run at box office will ensure the profit for the producers. As far as the Joppan is concerned it will add more profit to the makers due to its spectacular run at box office in the first week. The film has managed to stay solid against the Pulimurugan storm in the Kerala and in one way benefited also. Enters in to second week in around 90 screens with little damage of reductions in shows which are negligible in totality. Collects approx 8.45 Cr in the first week harthal hampered numbers a bit otherwise it had every chance to beat 9 Cr. The first week of this movie one of the best first week collection in 2016 of Mollywood.
3. Kavi Udheshichathu
Bad luck. Wonders who advised them to release in the middle of big ‘M’ films. Totally unnoticed and uncared by the audience. Sad part of this untimely release is that it is debut film of a young talented directors. Released in around 70 screens the film is enriched with good WOM but could not convert in to box office collection due to the roaring success of big ‘M’ movies. It looks like the makers were expecting a Anuraga Karikkinvellam moment since it survived heat of Kasaba and went on to become huge hit. With Biju Menon and Asif Ali in the lead it has potentials in the box office. So the makers may be praying for change of luck in the second week at least. The film has grossed approx 1.90 Cr in 5 days.
4. Oppam
Suffered heavily due to Pulimuruganbut performed strongly in the limited shows and screens it had. Crossed a magic 35 Cr in Kerala and heading towards 50 Cr worldwide. In around 50 odd screens the film has grossed approx 36.30 Cr in its five week successful box office journey through 12,300 shows in Kerala .
5. Tamil
Remo and Devi occupied minor role in Kerala box office unlike other Tamil releases due to non availability of the screens. Should have waited for two weeks for the Kerala release ! Both of them together could not muster up 1 Cr from Kerala screens.
